Washington Spirit Waive Katie Stengel and Cameron Castleberry

The Washington Spirit announced today that forward Katie Stengel and midfielder Cameron Castleberry have been waived.

Stengel started 10 times for the Spirit and made 19 total appearances, including both of the playoff games last season. She was tied for second on the team with four goals in 2016, but her 2017 season got off to a rough start when she was injured in the second game. In this past weekend’s game against Portland, Stengel came on as a sub in the 76’.

Castleberry, a University of North Carolina graduate, was drafted by the Spirit with the number 36 pick in the 2017 NWSL Draft. While she saw time in pre-season, her regular season time was limited, managing just 26 minutes over two games.

Both players were waived in preparation for the return of Argentine forward Estefania Banini and Chilean forward Yanara Aedo. Aedo and Banini are expected to make their return to Washington in the upcoming week.

That leaves just 16 players for the Spirit’s upcoming match in Boston on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET.
